Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte (1847)

Wuthering Heights is the story of the romantic and tempestuous relationship between Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliff.

Set in the Yorkshire moors of northern England, the novel follows the characters from childhood to adulthood.

After Heathcliff is adopted into the family and brought up as a brother to Catherine, their passionate love for one another eventually turns to bitterness.

Heathcliff is tormented by his life of poverty and his inability to marry Catherine, who is promised to the wealthy Edgar Linton.

After their marriage, Heathcliff becomes increasingly vengeful, tormenting both the Earnshaw and Linton families.

The novel is narrated by two characters, Lockwood, a gentleman visitor to the region, and Nelly, the housekeeper of Wuthering Heights.

Lockwood's narrative frames the story of Heathcliff and Catherine, while Nelly's recounts the history of the family.
