Skeeter, a young white woman and aspiring writer, decides to write a book from the maids' point of view, which she calls "The Help".

Aibileen is a maid working for Skeeter's friend and she becomes the first to agree to speak up about the struggles of the maids.

Celia Foote is a white woman who is desperate for acceptance in the community and turns to the maids for help.
