Summary, The Federalist Papers by Alexander Hamilton, James Madison, and John Jay (1787-1788).

The Federalist Papers were a series of 85 articles written by Alexander Hamilton, James Madison, and John Jay in order to explain and defend the newly proposed Constitution of the United States.

The articles were published in newspapers and later compiled into two volumes to be distributed to the citizens of the newly formed states.

The authors addressed the general public, as well as the state representatives, in their papers.

The papers argued in favor of a strong federal government, with a balance between the three branches of government.

They also highlighted the importance of the separation of powers, the doctrine of enumerated powers, and the necessity of a strong judiciary.

The Federalist Papers were instrumental in the adoption of the Constitution and served as the basis for many of the early decisions of the Supreme Court.

The papers are still closely studied today to gain an understanding of the intentions of the Founding Fathers when drafting the Constitution.
