Lord of the Flies by William Golding (1954)

A group of British schoolboys are stranded on a deserted island after their plane crashes.

The boys attempt to establish a society and create a democracy, but their leader, Ralph, is challenged by Jack, who is determined to have complete control.

Jack and his followers hunt and kill pigs, and their behavior gradually becomes more savage and violent.

The boys become divided between Ralph's group, which wants to remain civilized, and Jack's group, which has reverted to a primitive state.

As tensions between the two groups rise, Simon, a sensitive boy, discovers the truth about the island--that they are not alone and that a "beast" is on the island.

The boys eventually descend into chaos, culminating in a bloody confrontation between Ralph and Jack.

At the end of the novel, the boys are rescued by a navy ship and they are forced to confront the evil they have unleashed.
