Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison (1952)

Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison (1952)

Invisible Man tells the story of an unnamed African American narrator and his journey to self-discovery.

He moves from the South to the North, experiencing racism and discrimination along the way.

The narrator starts off as an idealistic young man, believing in the power of education to help the African American community.

However, he quickly learns that the education system is unfair and that the white power structure seeks to keep African Americans in an oppressed position.

As he struggles to find his own identity, the narrator is pulled into a power struggle between two black leaders, Booker T. Washington and Marcus Garvey.

He ultimately discovers that the only way to gain true freedom is to reject the labels placed on him by society and find his own personal identity.

The novel is an exploration of identity politics and the power of the individual to break free from oppressive systems of oppression.
