Discover Oceans and Seas, South China Sea
The South China Sea is an expansive body of water located between mainland China, the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei, and Taiwan.
It is an important waterway for international trade and is estimated to be around 3.5 million square kilometers in size.
It is home to an incredibly diverse range of species from corals and sea turtles to whales and dolphins, with some of these species being endangered.
It is a key contributor to the local and global economy, providing important resources for fishing, natural gas and oil.
It is also a popular destination for recreational activities such as diving, boating and sailing.
Unfortunately, the water body is threatened by unsustainable fishing practices and rising sea levels due to climate change.
Pollution from land-based sources also poses a threat to marine life in the South China Sea.
