Catch-22 by Joseph Heller (1961)

Catch-22 by Joseph Heller (1961)

Set during World War II, the novel follows the exploits of Captain John Yossarian, an Air Force bombardier.

Yossarian is stationed on the island of Pianosa, off the Italian coast in the Mediterranean Sea.

He is consumed by the desire to live, but the bureaucracy of the military and its arbitrary regulations prevent him from doing so.

Yossarian's struggle against bureaucracy is personified by the absurd Catch-22, a law that states that if a soldier is sane enough to try to get out of service, he is considered too sane to be released.

The novel focuses on the idea of individualism and how it is oppressed by authoritarian forces.

The characters in the book are often seen as anti-establishment and anti-heroic figures.

Throughout the novel, Heller uses dark humor, satire, and irony to illustrate the absurdity of war.
