Beowulf (8th century)

Beowulf (8th century)

Beowulf is an epic poem written in Old English, thought to have been composed in the 8th century.

It tells the story of Beowulf, a warrior from Scandinavia, who comes to the aid of Hrothgar, the King of the Danes, to defeat a monster named Grendel.

Beowulf is praised for his courage and strength as he fights and ultimately defeats Grendel.

Beowulf then goes on to battle Grendel's mother in her underwater lair, emerging victorious once again.

After a period of peace, an dragon attacks the Danes, and Beowulf is called upon to fight it.

This time, Beowulf is fatally wounded in the fight, but manages to slay the dragon with the help of his loyal followers.

The poem ends with Beowulf's funeral, where his heroic deeds are praised and celebrated.
