1808 - The ‘Rum Rebellion’ overthrows Captain William Bligh.
The ‘Rum Rebellion’, which took place in Australia in 1808, was a revolt against the Governor of New South Wales, Captain William Bligh.
Bligh had been appointed Governor in 1806 and had imposed a monopoly on the importation of rum and the sale of spirits in the colony.
This caused widespread dissatisfaction among landowners and merchants, who were used to trading in alcohol and saw Bligh’s actions as an infringement on their rights.
Bligh attempted to implement a series of reforms to make the colony more efficient, but this further exacerbated tensions.
In 1808, a group of disgruntled settlers led by John Macarthur and George Johnston marched on Government House and overthrew Bligh.
Johnston declared martial law and replaced Bligh as Governor.
The rebellion was eventually quashed by the British Army in 1810 and Bligh was reinstated as Governor.
